Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Ziemi Tarnogórskiej (Society of Friends of the Tarnowskie Góry Land) is one of the oldest and most distinguished NGOs in Poland. Its beginnings go back to the 1950s. Without the contribution of social workers, the two flagship technology monuments related to silver, lead, and zinc ore mining, i.e. the Black Trout Adit (Sztolnia Czarnego Pstrąga) and the Historic Silver Mine (Zabytkowa Kopalnia Srebra) would not exist today. The addition of the local miners' heritage to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2017 has been the crowning moment for the Society's strenuous efforts.
